For many years Councils have charged a fee to developers to contribute to the need for new or upgraded infrastructure as a result of a particular development. The fee was imposed because developers were constructing commercial and/or residential developments and making large profits while not catering for the need for additional transport and water-related infrastructure that would be required as a result of the development.
Recently, some Councils have started charging developer contributions to PoPW developments. This has the potential to add hundreds of thousands of dollars to new or upgraded church developments. Developer contributions have not previously been charged to not-for-profit developments and certainly not to PoPW. The Growth Corporation and Mission Property Committee (MPC) has been challenging this position at the local level and has also been contributing to the Minister for Planning’s review on developer contributions. We will provide more news as this issue is resolved.
